What a doula is & why this support matters

A doula is a trained support person who walks with you through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Not medical, not clinical… but fully focused on you. Your partner brings love, connection, and emotional support— and a doula adds trained guidance, comfort techniques, and steady, continuous presence so you both feel supported throughout the entire experience.

I help you understand what’s happening, anticipate what’s next, and find your rhythm in labor. I stay with you continuously, noticing what you need, adjusting support as things change, and helping you feel calm, capable, and connected throughout the entire experience.

Research shows that continuous support during labor can lead to:

  • shorter labor

  • less need for pain medication

  • lower cesarean rates

  • more spontaneous vaginal births

  • fewer inductions and fewer assisted deliveries

  • higher Apgar scores and fewer NICU admissions

  • more breastfeeding success

  • better communication with your medical team

  • more confidence and less fear during birth

  • partners feeling more supported and involved

  • better postpartum adjustment

  • lower risk of postpartum depression and anxiety

  • lower overall healthcare costs

Support matters.
Presence matters.
Feeling safe matters.
Motherhood is Kingdom work… and no one should walk it alone.

A little note about your doula….

Crystal sitting on her front porch with a warm, relaxed smile

Hi, I’m Crystal Feldman — Jesus‑loving wife, mom of three, registered nurse of nearly twenty years, and a certified labor and postpartum doula and child passenger safety technician serving Central Iowa. I’ve spent most of my life caring for families, but doula work is where everything finally clicked into place.

I didn’t grow up dreaming of being a doula. I actually stumbled into a training on a whim, and what I learned helped me make sense of my own birth experience — the parts I had tucked away and never fully processed. It opened my eyes to how many women carry similar quiet, unspoken pieces. That’s when this work became more than a job. It became a calling.

Nursing has shaped me, but doula work hits differently. It’s slower, more personal, more connected. I get to be fully present with families instead of rushing from task to task. I love being the steady person in the room — the one who notices the small things, explains what’s happening, and helps you breathe again when everything feels big.

I’m not the “perfect birth, perfect mom, perfect everything” type. I’m the “let’s figure this out together, take a breath, and laugh when we need to” type. Motherhood is real, messy, beautiful, and overwhelming at times, and I’m here for all of it.

I bring both medical experience and heart‑centered care into every birth space, blending calm reassurance, practical support, and a little humor when it’s needed most. I’m also not afraid of the emotional layers that come with birth and postpartum. I’ve lived through my own version of that, and I know how isolating it can feel. You don’t have to carry any of it alone.

If you’re exploring support for your pregnancy, birth, or postpartum season, you’re welcome to explore my services. I keep things simple, flexible, and centered around what you actually need.
